Winning scores of -16/-18/-20/-19 lean towards players who don’t mind going low more than once in a tournament.
Last year Ryan Armour lead from start to finish for his first PGA Tour win. The year before Cody Gribble won despite an opening round 73 that left him in 101st place, so one mediocre round will not rule you out.
The course itself stretches to 7,440 yards, the par 5s measuring 590/612/554/584. Armour is not the longest hitter, his win came courtesy of great approach irons and a very solid putting week. You can also get a high finish by bombing it and holing a few putts, as Scott Strohmeyer (T4 2017, 1st in DD) and Jason Kokrak (T7, 4th in DD) did last year.
I’m going to take players who have past form of going low when the scoring is easy. All players offer value based on my model. To a large extent events like this come down to who has the hottest putter this week. I’m selecting players that have shown in the past year or so that they can shoot 15-under and better over 4 rounds.
Dylan Frittelli – backed him at the Safeway Open (see write up). Same applies in this event after a creditable 25th in Napa.
Denny McCarthy – poor at the Safeway but you can forgive that after winning the Web.com Tour Championship where he finished 23-under.
Adam Long – was poor through the Web.com play-offs but he had already secured his main tour card by then. Good opening round at the Safeway before fading over the weekend. A big outsider but he does go very low at times: 15-under at Ellie Mae Classic two months ago and 23-under at Lincoln Land Charity Championship back in June.
Anders Albertson – another who has no problem going consistently low. Won the Lincoln Land Charity Championship at 25-under. A blip at the Safeway Open, but played very well throughout the Web.com play-offs.
